Spring is a time for new life. New growth. Renewal, right?
So I guess it’s the perfect time to recreate this poor, forgotten blog!! Our IT team is working hard on updating our website with new content and images & we are determined to keep it fresh and new! At least we’ll do our best!
Speaking of spring renewal, I always get an influx of ideas to my brain this time of year. Perhaps because I have a bit more spare time for my thoughts. My head spins with plans for the upcoming year; creating new props, cleaning out the old, scheduling specials and events.
During this time, I often reflect on our “style”. People often ask what our photography style is. The terms lifestyle, photo-journalistic, candid and natural light get thrown around an awful lot in the photography world. Pinpointing a specific style is hard for me. I love shooting lifestyle & photo-journalistic, but sometimes you just need to pose a bit. I generally shoot natural light, but also use supplemental light when needed. Candid is great, but you need a mix to capture everything that the shoot entails.
I’ve heard clients refer to our work as “natural” & my favorite word that I’ve heard used – “Real”! I Love that! If I had to say I shoot for anything, it would be to have the images look real & natural. I want my subjects to appear comfortable and to capture their personalities.
In keeping to this “real” and “natural” goal, we tend to keep the prop usage somewhat simple. I stress that parents bring personal items to their sessions with their kids. How special are images that include a favorite toy, book or blanket?! We definitely utilize chairs, baskets and other decorative items in our sessions, but our favorite is using nature’s items as props. Tree stumps, a natural stream, a flower bed all give us some options while maintaining a natural look.

That being said, I occasionally get inspired to do themed mini sessions – there are so many cute ideas! Parents tend to love these as it takes the creative pressure away from them. While these sessions are themed & do use some props, again, I like to keep it simplified to keep the focus on the kids rather than have them get lost in a pile of props! We’ll be posting our schedule of Summer Minis coming up soon – but I’m super excited about the ideas we have set! There will be some old favorites & some that we’ve never done before & can’t wait to do!

Thanks for following us and our Spring ideas!
